Permission to Transfer

If you are thinking about taking courses at a college near your hometown over the summer, you must get permission from the Transfer Credit Coordinator, located in the Advisement and Transition office.  Schedule an appointment to meet with your advisor to first discuss the class.  Your advisor must sign the Permission to Transfer form as well, and you must provide a course description for all the courses requested for transfer credit if not listed on our equivalency charts.

Check the Transfer Equivalency Chart online as a guide for which courses will transfer to Cortland: http://www2.cortland.edu/offices/advisement-and-transition/transfer-credit-services/transfer-equivalencies/

  • As a transfer student, you should pay attention to how many credits you transferred already.  A maximum of 64 credits can be transferred from 2-year colleges, and you may already be at this limit.  A maximum of 79-83 credits can be transferred from a combination of two and four year colleges.  Remember your residency requirement!  You must complete a minimum of 45 credits at Cortland.
  • If you are taking this course as a re-take to raise your GPA, the re-take must be taken at Cortland in order to impact your GPA.
  • Grades of C– or better transfer back to Cortland for credit.  D grades will not transfer.
  • Your advisor or the Transfer Credit Coordinator should be able to answer questions you have regarding planning for summer courses.  All the best for a productive summer!

Advisement and Registration

Advisement and registration at Cortland may be different from your previous institution, so you should plan ahead and be prepared for Cortland’s expectations.  All students at Cortland must meet with their academic advisor to discuss courses and academic progress before registering for next semester’s classes.  Your advisor will give you a 4 digit PIN to allow you access to the registration area on myRedDragon, where you will register for classes by yourself at your designated time-ticket.  You can find out who your advisor is through myRedDragon or by contacting your academic department.

Fall and summer semester registration season is here.  Are you ready?  Here are some helpful tips when preparing to register on myRedDragon for your summer and fall classes.

  • Section Numbers-As you check out possible courses for your schedule, be sure to pay close attention to section numbers.  Section numbers are the three digits listed after the course number.  600 sections of courses are for majors of that subject only.  700 sections are for non-majors only. For example, ENG 203-601 is for English majors only.  ENG 203-701 is for non-English majors only.
  • Lab/Lecture pairings-Some classes have mandatory labs.  You need to pay close attention to which labs correspond directly with the lecture section you wish to register for.  You must register for the correct lecture and lab sections at the same time.
  • Maximum Credit Hours-During the fall semester, you may only register for up to 18 credits.  If you wish to take more than 18 credit hours, you must seek special permission from your Associate Dean.
  • Closed Sections-The department chair offering the course is the only person who can allow special permission to enter a closed course.  Ask yourself the following questions before seeking permission: Is this course vital for degree progress? Are there other sections of this course that I can take?  Over-enrolling a section happens sparingly.
